20th Anniversary Meeting of Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council held in London
On 19-22 November 2013, a delegation of Uzbekistan headed by HE Mr Elyor Ganiev, Minister of Foreign Economic Relations, Investments and Trade, visited the UK to participate at the 20th Anniversary Meeting of the Uzbek-British Trade and Industry Council (UBTIC) and hold meetings with representatives of the British and international business circles. It was composed of heads of the Ministries of Economy and Higher and Secondary Special Education, NHC Uzbekneftegaz, SJC Uzkimyosanoat, SJC Uzpharmsanoat, State Committee on Geology and Mineral Resources, Association Uzeltekhsanoat and the Centre of High Technologies in Tashkent.
The head of the Uzbek delegation held meetings with The Rt Hon Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Senior Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, The Rt Hon Fiona Woolf, Lord Mayor of the City of London, as well as representatives of the UKTI and the British Chamber of Commerce.
On 21 November 2013, the UBTIC’s 20th Anniversary Meeting was held in the Locarno Suite of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and attended by over 150 delegates. The session was chaired by Rt Hon Peter Lilley MP, UBTIC Co-chairperson from the British side. Co-chairperson from the Uzbek side Minister Elyor Ganiev addressed the audience with a detailed report on the status and prospects of the Uzbek-British trade-economic and investment ties. HE Mr Abdulaziz Kamilov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan, who was in London for an official visit, also welcomed participants.
The practical issues of further deepening of investment, trade-economic cooperation, joint projects between the two countries were discussed at the meeting. The Uzbek delegation informed the representatives of more than 70 British organizations on business and economic climate in the country, the potential development of mutually beneficial relations in various fields, including oil and gas, chemical, mining and processing, pharmaceutical, food and construction industries, including within the free economic zones in Navoi, Angren and Jizzak.
The participants also considered the prospects of further deepening cooperation in science and education, implementation of relevant projects, including the development of the Centre of High Technologies in Tashkent with the support of partners from the University of Cambridge.
UBTIC is the main bilateral forum designed to promote economic, trade and investment cooperation between Uzbekistan and the United Kingdom. The Memorandum on its establishment was signed in May 1994.
The UBTIC’s meetings are held annually, alternately in Tashkent and London. Its first session took place in October 1994 in London during the international conference "Prospects of Doing Business in Uzbekistan" organized under the auspices of the UKTI.
