The 3rd International British-Uzbek Forum «Pearl of the East» was held in London
The delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan headed by Professor Akmal Saidov, the Chair of the Committee on democratic institutions, nongovernmental organizations and self governing bodies of citizens of the Legislative Chamber of Oliy Majlis (Parliament), Director of National Center for Human Rights, participated at the 3rd International British-Uzbek Forum «Pearl of the East» titled as «The development of civil society institutions: basic conceptions, models and approaches», which was held in London on 13-14 November 2013.
The delegation also included members of the Chambers of Oliy Majlis, leaders and members of the Public fund of supporting NGO and other institutions of civil society, Republican charity fund «Mahalla», Independent institute for monitoring the formation of civil society, Center of social-economic development «Sabr» of Samarkand region, Social Initiatives Support Fund (SISF) and other NGOs.
The event was organized by NGO Haven Wolverhampton (UK), Parliamentary Commission of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan, SISF, Center «Sabr» with support of the Embassy of Uzbekistan in London and Embassy of United Kingdom in Tashkent.
Around 150 people, representatives of institutions of civil society, legislative bodies, academics and experts, guests from France, Russia, USA, Nigeria and other countries attended the event.
The main aims of the Forum were presentation of the model of development of civil society of Uzbekistan, successful examples of social partnerships in solving social tasks on improving the life quality, exchange of opinions and development of strategy of collaboration between institutions of civil society of two countries.
Such themes as «Successful women», «Social partnerships and social order», «Sustainability of NGO and social entrepreneurship», «Business, culture and art» and «The models of development of local communities» were considered during the Forum. The participants shared experience of their countries in indicated spheres and submitted their vision of solving actual issues in development of institutions of civil society.
In the framework of Forum the photo exhibition «Ancient architecture of Uzbekistan» by Frédérique Bressand (France), photo exhibition «One day from the life of NGO in Uzbekistan», presented by SISF, as well as the concert of national artist of Uzbekistan Munojat Yulchieva were organized.
During the visit a number of meetings were conducted by Professor Akmal Saidov with the representatives of Parliament and Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the United Kingdom.
In particular, the member of the House of Lords of the British Parliament, the President of British-Uzbek Society Frederick Ponsonby supported further joint organizing international events on parliamentarism and civil society themes in Tashkent and London.
At the meeting with Ms Diane McKelvey, the Deputy Director of Eastern Europe and Central Asia Directorate, it was emphasized that abovementioned Forum is one of the indicators of new dynamics in the Uzbek-British relations which cover political dialogue, trade-economic and cultural cooperation, as well as the issues of human rights and civil society.
